What is Ashtanga Yoga?

"Ashtanga Yoga" means "Eight Limb Approached Yoga" because "Ashta" means "Eight" and "Anga" means "Limbs." Patanjali Yoga Sutras define the following Eight Limbs:

1. Yama:

Yama refers to Abstinences. It teaches us sobriety and ethical standards. The five Yamas are

2. Niyamas:

Personal rules must be followed. The second limbs of yoga are the rules you set for yourself, such as self-discipline and self-observances.

Meaning:
The five niyamas (observances) are:

3. Asanas :

Physical Postures are referred to as Asanas. According to Chapter 2 of Patanjali Yoga Sutras 46, not all bodily positions are asanas.

Meaning:
Asanas are a type of physical posture that is both stable and comfortable.
Asanas are physical postures that prepare the body for yoga, meditation, pranayama, dhyana, and other spiritual practises. It's the start of your yoga journey.

4. Pranayama:

Breath Control is referred to as Pranayama. It's made up of two words: "Prana" means "Life Force, or Breath," and "Yama" means "Control." Pranayama is defined by the Patanjali Yoga Sutras as the right retention and splitting of breath.

5. Pratyahara :

The withdrawal of senses is referred to as pratyahara. When your mind or senses quit engaging with the exterior environment, you've successfully focused your attention inward. Controlling the senses gets easier as a result of this.
The inner awareness of the human body is built up of five layers known as "Pancha Kosha."

6. Dharana :

Concentration is referred to as Dharana. Our minds are fickle, and they alter all the time. Dharana training allows you to focus on one thing or facet at a time. This can be accomplished by Mantra Chanting or Meditation.

7. Dhyana :

Dhyana refers to Meditation. In this, your mind remains still and you achieve deep rest and relaxation.

8. Samadhi :

Contemplation is referred to as Samadhi. The final or ultimate stage of consciousness, in which you are only aware of your own thoughts and abilities. You become in touch with your inner nature, which is full of love, joy, and strength.

When the four external limbs are joined, the other four naturally evolve.
